If you need more than that, go with what your clients find acceptable and what you feel your techs can operate easily. TL DR: For simple video playback, you can't go wrong with Playback Pro Plus X. Anybody who stopped using PBP while still owning licenses because it stopped working after upgrading needs to call me so I can talk you in to making more foolish decisions, like selling me your old keys. A 2015 MacBook Pro or Mini with an SSD is more than powerful enough for the task, and doesn't need or really benefit from the latest OS and will still work with the older PBP just fine. You do not need the latest and greatest to playback 1080p60, which is still pretty standard and not going anywhere soon. The rarer the system chosen, the more likely any faults in your video files will be blamed on the player, and your client will make you rent PBP anyway.Īlso, haters ragging on X taking so long to come out have probably never worked in software development are largely oblivious to the strategies essential to selecting hardware to run playback systems. It's all getting triggered by Companion anyway.Īlso, PBP has a long standing reputation as the corporate video playout system. If I dedicate Watchout to a task that PBP could easily do, then I am potentially wasting resources by not having Watchout or another media server when it pops up.Īnd at the end of the day, I'll swap PBP out for VLC if it's appropriate. The name of the game for me is resource management. Millumin, Mitti and QLab are certainly lightyears beyond PBP in many areas such as mapping/warping (which should be done in projector for the most part.), but are simply no better at simply playing out one video at a time, and are actually approaching media server capabilities, at which point my go to is Watchout. If you need more features than PBP offers, then you're not looking for a video playback system. Everything else is just copying what PBP perfected, or unnecessarily differentiated so as to not copy PBP. The interface is obvious and remote control features are very complete. Playback Pro Plus (X) is still the gold standard in my world. The best system is the one your local tech can operate without difficulty.
